Don Khon - Day 5 01/02/2010

Finishing up the waterfalls here and having already set everything up last night, this morning I was of to meet up with my 8am boat. Khon Phapheng falls is actually the largest waterfall is SE Asia so my hopes were high, especially after somphamit falls yesterday. A long wait and two more people later we were off. The boat ride was rather short as we just went upriver a bit back to the village of Nakasang where I first started the island journey. I was under the impression it was by boat all the way but it turns out we had to drive there. So the three of us were put into a minivan with many others from who nows where, and the now larger group was off. Maybe a 30 minute ride, we pulled into a small lot where you could see the path leading down to the falls, although you couldn't see them yet. Walking down the path, there was a empty viewing area over looking the upper portion, but it was really nothing and no one was satisfied that it was the right place. Another minute or two down, we came upon lots of people, many Thai tourists, and it was obvious that this pavillon directly facing the falls was the best view point. Getting to the railing and taking my first glimpse, it was really something. However it just wasn't what I was expecting. I had seen basically the same thing yesterday, and I thing " largest in SE Asia " made me thing tall rather than wide. Nontheless it was quite stunning from the balcony, and the views nothing to frown upon. I did the camera swapping thing with someone, expect this time I really don't like the picture.

Wanting to find a place with less people. I walked a little and ound an opening with a clear view and a log to sit on and tried to relax a bit. That wasn't happening though, as I never did get over feeling like crap, it just comes and goes when ever the hell it wants for hours or a day at a time. And it was starting again now. It certainly has dampered the time on the what was supposed to be islands, but now is only one island, but its all part of it. Can't plan these things. So not really having the energy to walk, although there was nothing else here anyway. I went back to the van and waited for the return journey....
Back at the village, the sun just wasn't helping anything, and the waiting for the boat felt like an hour although was probably 10 minutes. Once back on the island I tried to eat and pretty much forced myself then retreated to the room. I was there for an hour or so lying when I just got frustrated and decided I wasn't going to to this again and went to the balcony and just sat down outside. It was at this time a group of 5 young guys got the remaining 2 bungalows and gave me people to talk to and talk my mind of things. Talked away about the gibbon experience which they where thinking of doing up until they went off to explore. Later feeling better I plugged the laptop in which I couldn't do until the electricity came on at 6pm, and went out for dinner. I don't know whether it ws dumb to leave the laptop charging in the open, but this place is great and theft really isn't an issue here. Eating at what had become my nightly place when I made it out at night,  Anny's Restaurant, I relaxed a bit and ate at a comfortable pace. The people here had really gotten used to me as most only stay a day or two. After dinner. I went across the road to a ticket office and bought a ticket for the morning. I was leaving in the AM I decided. Feeling great or like crap, I was off. Going to miss the sunsets here though.....
